What is TMJ ?

This joint is located within your jaw, below the ear. It is one of the most sophisticated that helps maintain jaw form and function. This joint controls the movement of your mouth when you chew, speak or smile. It is also one of the most delicate joints, owing to its continuous use and the effect of the powerful jaw muscles.

What is TMDs ?
TMDs – Temporo mandibular joint disorder
TMDs can arise due to multiple reasons like improper alignment of teeth, deviated jaw (laterognathy), stress, teeth grinding, arthritis, or something as simple as chewing gum or poor posture.
Symptoms
The severity of symptoms varies from person to person. Incase you experience any of the above symptoms; you must report to the TMJ dentist to help you get rid of this problem.
- Waking up with headache or pain behind the ear
- Difficulty in biting and chewing
- Clicking or popping sounds when opening and closing mouth
- Reduced mouth opening
- Jaw tenderness
- Pain in jaw and neck area
- Worn out teeth
- Fracture teeth
- Treatment for TMDs can include jaw exercises, medications, dental appliances, splint therapy and more. TMD treatments are most often an amalgamation of the treatment options listed.
- The dental appliances are used to help position the jaw correctly to aid in reducing pressure on the joint. These are custom made as per your problems and can be used at night or daytime, as per Dr. Basu’s treatment plan for you.
- Surgical treatment for TMJ disorder is rarely advised due to the complex nature of the joint. Surgical interventions have a very low success rate. Make sure to get a second opinion if you have ever considered surgery.
